House of Dog Training
I’ve always had an extreme love for animals, especially dogs! Growing up I have volunteered in multiple dog rescues as well as the Humane Society, constantly trying to spend my free time around animals. I am currently attending the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs as a psychology major with a minor in counseling (I’ll be graduating in 2018), and am trying to find a way to mesh my love of psychology with my love of animals, hopefully through animal assisted therapy or service dog work.
My adventures in dog training began when I adopted my Border Collie mix, Belle, who was unfortunately pulled from her mom and littermates too soon and, as a result, had zero social skills when it came to other dogs and was fearful and reactive to nearly everything. To continue working on her reactivity we began taking classes almost nonstop at Lucky Dog. Belle attended several puppy classes, basic and advanced obedience, tricks, and agility. Many of the classes I took were taught by Angie Neal, CDBC, who was also running an apprenticeship program at the time. She allowed me to join her program in 2014 and I haven’t turned back since!
While in Angie’s apprentice program I trained and worked with rescue dogs, assisted in classes, and began attending educational seminars. Shortly after House of Dog Training opened its doors, I began assisting in classes and became a trainer’s assistant in 2015. I’ve assisted in puppy kindergarten, good dog obedience, agility, tricks, and reactive dog classes. As of February 2017 I am teaching my own classes, and am working towards becoming the best dog trainer I can be. My experience with my own dog has taught me to be very patient, and that training should be and needs to be FUN! To keep things fun and exciting with my Belle, I’ve gotten heavily involved in trick dog training, which has opened up a whole new world for both of us! I saw my dog’s confidence skyrocket, and found something that I am extremely passionate about. In February 2017 I became a Certified Trick Dog Trainer through Kyra Sundance’s ‘Do More with Your Dog!’ program, and I am actively trying to share my passion with others!
